This adventure begins Wednesday, February 29, 2012. The original plan was to leave at 5PM in the afternoon. After reviewing the weather forecast we decided to start the trip early because a bad storm was quickly moving in. Departure time was changed to 2 PM.
We hit the road around 2:15PM. The drive takes about 3 1/2 – 4 hours under normal conditions. Luckily the roads were clear and safe. At this time of year in Canada these roads can be very dangerous. As we would learn later on, we were about 1 hour in front of a major snow storm.
The drive was beautiful cruising through dynamite blasted roads along with snow and ice covered wilderness. Many of the roadside rock ledges had fresh running water frozen by the cold snap completely encompassing the rocks.
Once we arrived at our destination (Best Western Pembroke) it wasn’t long until the snowstorm caught up with us. There were plenty of snowmobiles parked in the parking lot of the hotel. The snowmobile trails are almost endless in this area and often are the first trails to open in Ontario.
